California and Connecticut are the only two states that mandate a no-charge policy for all service stations providing air pumps, which leaves travelers in 48 states in a frustrating position when they don’t have change for the air pump. The aggravation builds when those carrying no cash – not unusual in today’s age of card-wielding consumers– have to pay the ATM fee to withdraw cash to get change, to put 50 cents in the air pump.
For bicyclists, the ability to find a no-charge air pump may be critical if they are riding without cash or cards.
Peterson spent months searching online and calling gas and service stations throughout the U.S. and Canada to build the site’s initial database of free-air locations. The site continues to grow as users log on and add new locations for free air.
“I wanted to give everyone the chance to share information and the ability to gain access, no matter where they are, to free air pumps when they need them,” Peterson says.
The beauty of FreeAirPump.com is the convenience, Peterson says. Travelers can plan ahead and print up mapped stations that provide free air directly from the site, or they can simply use their smart phones or tablets on the road to find a local free air station when they need one. There’s no cost or fees to use the site; all that is needed is Internet access.
